Daily Skincare Routine

Good afternoon!  Today I wanted to share with you my skincare routine and what works for me.  Based on Asian beauty skin routines, particularly S. Korean, I have a multi-step skincare routine that is ideally done in the morning and again at night.  I will cover each step and include the main products I employ in my beautifying routine.

Let’s begin!

1. Cleansers: I always start the process with cleansing my face to remove any makeup, oils, and dirt that has accumulated on my skin.  I use three different types of cleanser:

  • Oil cleanser, to help melt off any stubborn makeup
  • Foaming cleanser, to gently clean off the oil cleanser and dirt
  • And if I feel it necessary, I use an exfoliating cleanser to remove dead skin and give the face a smooth texture

2. Toner: After cleansing, I restore the moisture of the skin by misting rose water onto my face. Skin hydration is imperative for the next step!

3. Serums: These are great for targeting problem areas and adding extra moisture layers to the skin.  I use retinol (vitamin A), hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide (vitamin B3).

  • Retinol helps prevent aging and keeping acne at bay
  • Hyaluronic acid serum is a moisturizing serum that also helps tighten the pores
  • Niacinamide is also a pore tightening serum and also helps smooth out the complexion

4. Cream/balm: In the morning I use a skin balm before putting on sunscreen.  At night I use a nightcream, which is thicker than a balm, and eye cream.  I have a variety of ones that I alternate between, depending on the condition of my skin.  I have ones that are light and creamy for when my skin is normal, oily ones that are extra hydrating for when my skin is moderately dry, and thick ones that give intense hydration for when my skin is flaky.

5. Sunscreen: This is an underestimated and often skipped step, but I have been getting better with this lately with a new sunscreen product I have been trying.  It is by Babo Botanicals, the Baby Skin Mineral Sunscreen.  It is fragrance and dimethicone free, with an SPF of 50. ^-^  Also, I use an SPF lip balm by Salt & Stone.  It is fragrance free, basically has no taste, and is SPF 30.  I am especially happy with this product.  Usually sunscreen lip balms are bummers because they taste terrible or are full of chemicals, but this one is a winner.

6. Makeup: After everything has been applied in the morning, I top it all off with my daily makeup.  I use a tinted moisturizer by BareMinerals called Complexion Rescue.  It is SPF 30, which is why I sometimes don’t put an actual sunscreen on, but with the days becoming sunnier, I will need to use it more diligently.

7. Body moisturizing: Moisturizing the body is equally as important as moisturizing the face. Throughout the day I lotion my hands, especially after washing them.  At night I use Burt’s Bees cuticle cream around my nails and fingers, then top it off with a Burt’s Bees Baby fragrance free lotion and put on moisture retention gloves.  It works wonders on the nail and skin health, making everything supple and hydrated.

8. Other treatments:

Sheet face masks: These Korean sheet masks are another way to give your skin the hydration it needs to stay supple and young.  I use them once or twice a week.  My favorite brand is MEDIHEAL.  I don’t have to worry about them dripping on to my clothes like other ones I have tried; they have a thicker serum that clings to the mask. One downside is that not all of the ingredients are natural in the product, depending on the type, but these particular MEDIHEAL face masks, thankfully, do not irritate my skin.

So that sums up my skincare routine.  It has been a long time of trial-and-error with products, weeding out the ones that didn’t work, and now, after all of that, I have the best collection of products that I have ever had.  Of course, I am always interested in trying something new, but I don’t want it to be an immediate, predictable failure.  I have gotten to the point that I pretty much know if a product will be a winner based on the ingredients.  So anything that checks out ingredient wise, I am willing to try.

Do you have a skincare routine?  What is your process?  And favorite products?
